Report: Tech Employment Analysis in Colorado and Wyoming

Colorado and Wyoming added tech jobs at nearly twice the national rate over the past 15 years. The region now ranks 8th nationally in tech employment — ahead of Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, and Austin. So what does the data actually say about where it stands?

This report, produced by the Business Research Division at the University of Colorado Boulder's Leeds School of Business for the NSF ASCEND Engine, provides the most comprehensive analysis to date of tech employment across Colorado and Wyoming. Drawing on Bureau of Labor Statistics data and Lightcast, the study benchmarks CO-WY against 21 peer metro markets on growth, specialization, and wages.

The findings confirm that the CO-WY region is a genuine tech hub in its own right. Tech employment grew 61% between 2010 and 2025, outpacing the national average of 45%. The region's tech concentration, measured by location quotient, exceeds New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, and Atlanta. And on a cost-of-living-adjusted basis, tech wages rank sixth nationally. The report also identifies where gaps remain, and what it will take to close them.
